Capital markets play a crucial role in the economic development of a country, by providing financial resources required for the long term sustainable development of the economy. The Indian capital markets have a history of more than a century and now with over 7,000 public companies listed across a full spectrum of business sectors, India is one of the fastest growing wealth management markets in the world. The Indian equity market is expanding in terms of listed companies and market capital, widening the field for brokerage firms, new products segments and the growth of derivatives trading. India is expected to be fourth largest private wealth market globally by 2028. This substantial growth in the market capitalization would be the key to drive the advancement of primary and secondary market, bond market, fund management as well as currency and commodity market.

In India, both primary and secondary markets play a significant role in ensuring that the economy and the businesses are well fuelled in terms of liquidity. However, as a proportion of GDP, India’s total equity market capitalisation is much lower compared to the global average. Retail investors constitute a very low proportion of the stock ownership in India. The number of demat accounts in India are significantly lower as compared to the number of banking accounts and only about 3% of the population invests in the stock market. This low level participation indicates a strong potential for participation by retail investors in Indian capital markets and contribute towards the country’s journey of becoming a US$5 trillion economy.

Keeping in view the importance of Capital Markets in wealth creation and to discuss various issues that can drive participation in this space, ASSOCHAM is organizing the 12th Capital Market Summit on March 04, 2020 at Hotel Four Seasons, Mumbai. The objective of the conference is to discuss a way forward for creating a vibrant capital market, through efficient governance and increased market participation. The Summit will provide a platform to various stakeholders, regulators, intermediaries and institutional and retail participants.
